The most recent of a long list of needless mishaps the NSW Rail System , can do naught but create more fears among the citizens of New South Wales. While the dangers the traveling public are exposed through by the terror inflicted on them by violent criminals could be easily remedied through proper security and effective penalties imposed on the perpetrators of these acts of terror, rather than the millions of dollars spent on spin doctors and Mickey Mouse security guards who have less authority than the ablutions caretaker.

If the path of privatization by other countries is to be followed by the state Labor Government , in addition to the continued reduction of maintenance which has been a feature of the State Labor Government , with thousands of railway maintenance workers being made redundant , not only causing hardship to Australian Battlers , but putting the traveling public at risk.

The horrendous revelation that the “black box” data logger on the train that crashed at Waterfall , while installed was not turned on because of Union intransigence must create the fear in all Rail travellers as to what other safety equipment has not been installed or has been turned off , because of some unfounded Union paranoia reminiscent of  a James Bond farce.

If this Installation of the "data loggers" was a recommendation of Justice Peter McInerney's inquiry into the 1999 Glenbrook rail disaster, why they were not installed?

There can be no room for cosy back room deals between the political parties and recalcitrant Trade Unions where the safety of Australians is at risk. As a regular user of City Rail, my primary concern is safety, be it threatened by thugs who appear to have been given ‘carte blanche’ as to their choice of passengers, neglected infrastructure or incompetent staff, and it takes little more than a cursory conversation, to create suspicions as to the suitability of some city Rail staff, particularly those entrusted with the lives of so many. Not only should these data boxes be activated immediately, but cameras with sound should be installed in the Driver Cabins, and all staff should be subject to immediate psychometric testing which should be reviewed monthly. It must be asked, what good is a budget surplus at the expense of, neglected children, neglected Hospitals, neglected National Parks , neglected Police Service , neglected Prison Service , neglected Public Housing , neglected Water , neglected electricity supply and neglected citizens? .Why not spend the budget surplus, and then there will be no need for the spin doctors to convince us that all this chaos and infrastructure degradation is honky dory, or the cannibalistic consultants paid to convince the politicians that they are better value at twice the price. Our public transport system is not a luxury, it is not a socialist featherbed, it is an essential service, and should be treated as such.
