It Don't Stack up
St George Greens MEDIA RELEASE 6 Dec, 2002 Greens Challenge Sartor to Back Stack Inquiry Decision Greens candidate for the state seat of Rockdale, Lesa de Leau, today called on Frank Sartor to live up to the claim that he’ll campaign hard for the people of Rockdale and to declare that he will push the Carr Government to filter the M5 East tunnel. “The third Upper House inquiry into the M5 East tunnel has recommended that the Roads & Traffic Authority be directed by the Government to immediately call for tenders for the installation of tunnel filtration,” said Ms de Leau. “The Greens call for Mr Sartor, as the Carr Government’s new recruit, to immediately stand up for the people of Rockdale. He needs to listen to those residents who have sworn under oath that their families’ health is suffering since the tunnel opened in December 2001. “Many, many people who live near the tunnel are sick of feeling sick and they are sick of being ignored by government authorities. Will they also be ignored by their next MP? “This week the Upper House Committee released a report expressing concerns about external air quality affecting residents living near the stack and residents living near the tunnel openings in Arncliffe and North Bexley. “The Government ignored recommendations by the same committee in 2001 to install a filter. “What is new in this week’s report are serious concerns about air quality inside the M5 East tunnel which affects over 80,000 people daily. “People’s health is at risk. When will the unsupportable denials stop? When will this Government take responsibility for its actions?” asked Ms de Leau.
